APPLYING FOR MEDICINE
Asked by Khadija

If you only have 1 science (bio) at A level is it possible to have a career in medicine in the future possibly after university? Or am I better off redoing yr 12 to have 2 sciences?

Hi Khaadija, It really depends on the university, some unis are more lenient for post grad students who only did 1 science at A-level. I would advice looking at different medical schools websites regarding the subject. If you find that the medical schools you want to go to need 2 sciences, maybe you could do an extra a-level alongside your degree, and then do post grad med. hope this helped!

Seasoned tutor and undergraduate at Royal Veterinary College

Having recently completed my A Level studies and going on to study Veterinary Medicine at University, I am eager to tutor secondary school level pupils. My teaching preferences are Geography and Biology, offered at both A Level and GCSE standard. I attained A* in both these subjects at GCSE and an A* in Geography and an A in Biology at A level. In both subjects I am most familiar with the AQA specification, however I am willing to offer tutoring to students studying under other exam boards. Achieving full marks in the coursework component of the Geography A Level, I am well equipped to offer assistance to students who may need help in this area. Having spent time as a Sixth Form tutor for pupils at my secondary school, I am willing to work with pupils of all abilities. My flexible and engaging teaching style centres on the needs of the student, with content provided following specification guidelines. As well as reviewing necessary subject content, a wide variety of exam-style questions, ranging from data response to factual recall, will be incorporated into sessions to adequately equip the pupil with the skills required to succeed in examinations. I am also willing to tutor GCSE French. Having achieved an A* in this subject at GCSE, I have since continued to practice the language so would be able to assist GCSE pupils with their French studies. Sessions will be composed of all four key components of language study, with exercises in reading, listening, writing and speaking covered. In this way the student is well-prepared to tackle all areas of the examinations. University preparation, particularly for Veterinary Medicine and Medicine, including Personal Statement assistance and Interview Practice can also be arranged upon request. Having undergone numerous interviews (and a large amount of interview practice) in order to gain a place on a Veterinary Medicine course, I am well-versed in the interview processes and will help strengthen interview skills to give any student the best chances at succeeding with their application. Please do not hesitate to contact me for further information.

Passionate tutor and undergraduate at Queen Mary university of London

I`m a fourth year medical student at Barts and the London, currently intercalating in pharmacology. I would love to help with GCSE biology, chemistry and maths and A-level biology and chemistry. I achieved As in these subjects at A-level and A* at GCSE so this puts me in a good position to aid with exam technique but I am also able to give students an insight into studying and researching science in the real world. I have successfully tutored students in a tutoring centre setting using a one to one approach as every student is unique and has different needs to achieve their goals. As each student is different, it requires slightly different approaches. The first lesson, which can be offered as a trial, is all about making an individual plan to concentrate on the areas that need work and make sure any gaps in subject knowledge are filled. During the sessions, I make sure the student is always engaged with questions and activities. I often use mnemonics and comparisons (often silly!) to help make the lesson content long term memory. I set homework after each lesson, which we go over at the beginning of the next lesson so topics are constantly being revisited, as repetition is often the best way to learn! I am also more than happy to help with medical school applications and other personal statements. I have experience of sitting on medical school interview panels so I have a good insight into what they are looking for and what makes a good candidate. I look forward to helping you reach your potential!

I’m a final year medical student at University passional about teaching!

A final year Medical student at Imperial College London (2014-2020), with an additional BSc degree in Medical Management (2018). My lifelong dream of studying Medicine became a reality the moment I joined one of the most prestigious and competitive universities in the world. This was after years of building extensive knowledge and expertise in multiple areas of study, especially Maths and Science. I have multiple interests and passions, one of which is teaching and passing on my years of knowledge to younger students! I absolutely relish in the field of teaching and communication, and thoroughly enjoy creating classes and content to help younger students in a similar position to where I was a few years ago. I attained 8A*s 4As for GCSE and A*AAA for AS/Alevel and so I have first-hand experience of the Education system in the UK and how to succeed in it. My teaching experience started at University where I conducted multiple teaching sessions through various student academic societies at the University, including Medical Education Society. I have also been an OSCE and PACES tutor to younger medical students for two years. I also participated as a volunteer for multiple medical education events at the university organised by student academic societies i.e. Mock examinations, revision days. I have over 4 years of experience in teaching University medical students. I very much enjoy teaching, and relish the opportunity to pass on knowledge to my peers to facilitate learning on a more personal level. My approach is firstly to establish an excellent level of communication and rapport between the student and myself in order to determine what teaching style best suits the student. I take a holistic approach that ensures the student's individual and unique requirements are met, whilst also creating an atmosphere of openness and clarity so that the student is comfortable to share what they want to achieve from the lessons. The lessons will be guided by the student's needs and wants, with clear learning objectives and outcomes set out for each class.
