Five adaptations of root hair?

Plants absorb water from the soil by osmosis. They absorb mineral ions by active transport, against the concentration gradient. Root hair cells are adapted for taking up water and mineral ions by having a large surface area to increase the rate of absorption. They also contain lots of mitochondria, which release energy from glucose during respiration in order to provide the energy needed for active transport.

- Root hair cells have long extensions/projections (hairs) on their outer surface to increase surface area to increase rate of osmosis of water and diffusion of mineral ions - On root hair cell membranes they have pumps to absorb mineral ions by active transport - Many mitochondria to provide ATP for the active transport of ions - Thin cell wall to reduce diffusion distance for ions and water - The root hair cells themselves have a long protruding part to increase surface area for osmosis and diffusion
