I don't understand the nitrogen cycle very well, the wording that people use us very hard for me to understand and remember?

• Nitrogen is needed to make proteins • Neither plants nor animals can absorb it from the air, since the bonds holding nitrogen atoms together in N2 (nitrogen) gas are very strong so need LOTS of of energy to break • However, there are two ways nitrogen can be taken out of the air and converted into something easier to absorb: o Nitrogen fixing bacteria found ‘free living’ in soil and also in the root nodules of certain plants (peas, beans, clover – we call them leguminous plants) take N2 gas and change it into nitrates in the soil o Lightning can ‘fix’ N2 gas, splitting the bond between the two atoms and turning them into nitrous oxides like N2O and NO2 that dissolve in rain water and drain into the soil • Plants absorb the nitrates they find in the soil and use the nitrogen in them to make proteins • Animals eat the plants (or other animals) and get the nitrogen they need from the proteins in the plant or animal • Waste (urine and faeces) from animals sends nitrogen back into the soil as ammonium compounds (the urea in urine contains nitrogen) • When the animals and plants die, they decay and all the proteins inside them are broken down into ammonium compounds and put back into the soil by decomposers • The plants can’t absorb ammonium compounds though, so a second type of soil bacteria, nitrifying bacteria, convert the ammonium compounds to nitrites and then to nitrates, which can then be absorbed by plants – and so the cycle goes on • Finally, there is a third, unhelpful type of (anaerobic) bacteria called denitrifying bacteria found in poorly aerated soil (ie not much oxygen) • These bacteria take the nitrates out of the soil and convert them back into N2 gas • Farmers can help reduce the amount of these unhelpful bacteria by ploughing and turning over soil

Qualified and experienced teacher

Introduction I am a fully qualified Science teacher with a specialism in Biology. I am passionate about helping others achieve their academic goals in a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment. Education I studied Biomaterials Science at the University of Birmingham. Later, I pursued a Master's in Infection and Immunity at the University of Leicester for which I was awarded the best student prize. I completed my PGCE from the University of Warwick and undertook a master's level project on misconceptions in science. Teaching experience Collectively, I have 17 years of experience tutoring face to face and online. Additionally, I have worked in schools and colleges across the West Midlands for the past 9 years. I have taught GCSE Science, BTEC Applied Science, A-level Biology and A-level Chemistry, covering the OCR, AQA and Edexcel specifications. In my position as the Head of Department I coordinated and delivered study skills sessions which included note taking and memory techniques to boost the performance of my students. I have been monitored by OCR for the practical endorsement for which I received positive feedback. Over the years I have helped students achieve or exceed their target grade. Three of the students I tutored this academic year have progressed from an E grade and below to an A grade in their school mocks. Tutoring approach I have a holistic approach to teaching ensuring students make rapid progress. My aim is to give my students the skills and tools to become confident, independent and reflective learners. Many students fail to perform in examinations to their best ability , despite putting in many hours of revise. My lessons focus on providing effective exam techniques and the key points required by the examination board. Each lesson is tailored entirely to the individual learners` requirements.

Medical Sciences Student, 2+ years of experience at a licensed tuition centre :)

Studying Medical Sciences at The University of Edinburgh has been an experience that has not only helped me understand the importance and value of education, but also taught me to have pride for the achievements that you accomplish at every stage of life; emanating from an individuals hard work and effort, this in itself is a great motivator. Having a years worth of experience tutoring KS3, GCSE and A level students at a licensed tuition centre, I realised my personal aim is not only to aid my tutees in achieving their fullest potential but allowing them to go beyond so that they become ever-gratifying to their dedication, and not only walk away from their schooling years with a sheet of paper that rewards their diligence, but also a work ethic and skill set that opens up many opportunities in life. Academia addresses more than just memorising the examinable materials. Every subject tests different degrees of critical thinking, application of knowledge and strategic answering. Recognising the importance of being able to do so is vital, both in and out of the exam hall, in order to achieve success. I aim to provide my tutees with a stress relieving teaching experience that is engaging and effective, all while honing their thinking skills, alongside making learning new content a passion rather than a chore. My teaching methods ensure that the child is always looking forward to their next lesson, which enforces a positive mindset - vital to effective learning!
