There are several different types of vaccine, dead, attenuated and acellular. The idea is the the vaccines contain proteins/lipids that the immune system will react to without causing harm to the body so when the body encounters the live/real pathogen it will amount an appropriate and sufficient immune response so the body dosn’t get sick. When a dead pathogen is incorporated into a vaccine the body will amount its primary immune response but the pathogen cannot replicate or secrete toxins as it is not active.
