The stomata itself is not a cell type but rather a pore. The size of the stomata and whether it is opened or closed is controlled through guard cells. There are usually two and they respond to changes in water potential. This means that when the guard cell is turgid (absorbed water) the stomata is open. When the guard cell is flaccid (lost water) the stomata is closed

Specialized cells known as guard cells surround stomata and function to open and close stomatal pores.
