Hi Richard Great question. As with all taxonomic classifications it’s all about the physical elements of the body of the creature. With arthropods the Modification (changes or differences) specialization ( adaptations which give specific functions), the number, and look of the segments of the body and legs ( in particular ones on the head such as antennae and the type of mouthparts) are important. Sometimes also other information like the location and structure of the reproductive organs, head, and changes to the breathing and excretion systems. Hope this helps Ian
