Respiration in the scientific context is when glucose is broken down in the mitochondria. This process uses oxygen, and results in carbon dioxide and water production, and energy (ATP) release. Put into a word equation it goes like this: Glucose + oxygen β€”> carbon dioxide + water (+ energy). The energy is put into brackets because in the chemical equation it is not included. In simple words, it's the act of breathing :) The science-y stuff: It's when we inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide.
