Hormones cause an effect in the body and this can be stopping production of other hormones or a direct effect on a particular area of the body. For example Progestrone (a female sex hormone) containing birth control pills cause mucus on the cervix to thicken preventing sperm being able to get through to the ovule or egg. Oestrogen (also a hormone) inhibits the production of FSH and FSH is one of the hormones that causes eggs to release. If the egg canโ€™t release then you canโ€™t get pregnant. Hormones have an effect in the body that can be useful in preventing pregnancy, that is why birth control pills contain them
