How do I compare peoms ?
Very passionate about English Literature and Politics and current Law student.
A mistake that people often make is that they see a metaphor in one poem and a metaphor in the other and compare those together because they’re the same language technique, and you can do this, but it often has limited effect and doesn’t really impress examiners. Good ways to compare poems are by theme, do they have similar issues in them and how are these issues presented in each poem? Also form, in what form are the poems written and what affect does this have - is it beneficial for each poem’s theme and language? Do they have similar rhyme schemes? How do they use rhyme in order to present the imagery that they’re discussing? Context of the poems. What is the historical context of each poem? Were they written during different periods? How does this affect the attitudes towards the issues written about? Don’t just compare language techniques, but look at the way structure and language link to the meaning and effect of the poems.
