Essays and stories are my bread and butter.

If you're talking about Narrative stucture then you can look at it from a number of angles. You can look at structure in terms time, sequence, voice etc. Say im writing an essay on the film Pulp fiction, i can talk about how the narrative has a non-linear structure to it, the events are told out of sequence. So you could find a character dies at one point in the film but then later the film jumps back to a scene where that same character is alive. Some books are written from multiple perspectives, for example, in the "Song of Ice and Fire" series most every chapter focuses on a different character, so the narrative structure is dictated by the shifts in perspective. Dickens' books would be a useful case study. Back when he was writing, his work was published in serials rather than just singular books. Sort of how t.v shows work, you'd get a new chapter or passage every month or week for example. So with that you could look into how the literal structure of the medium in which he wrote may have affected how his novels were written. Maybe he would be more inclined to leave the readers in suspense to as to give them more insentive to pick up the next issue. Bottom line, structure can be looked at in a bunch of different ways. Hope this was useful.
