“Euphemism” is the replacement of one (usually distasteful) expression with one that is mild and inoffensive. The etymology of “euphemism” may help. In Greek, “eu” means well and “pheme” means speaking. Applying it literally, you are speak well of something bad by making it sound more pleasant.
