The Ohio River valley was an important part of the French fur trade before the French and Indian Wars. The control of the Ohio River Valley was the sparking point of the global war between France and England. Both France and England, Virginia claimed the Ohio River Valley. France was determined to retain control of what is now know Pittsburgh in order to retain control of the fur trade along the Ohio River.
