GEOGRAPHY
Asked by Sarah

What are six forms of renewable energy? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

In short - 1. Nuclear Advantages: endless supply, cost effective, low carbon Disadvantages: Extremely volatile, can have disastrous consequences in the event of a leak (ex. Hiroshima) 2. Solar Power Adv: Low maintenance, easy to install, no carbon Dis: Expensive, needs sun so doesn’t work for everywhere 3. Hydro Energy Adv: Lots of ocean! So it is reliable Dis: Can be costly, may cause drought/cannot be used in water scarce areas 4. Biomass Energy Adv: Widely available, less rubbish in landfill, less expensive, carbon neutral Dis: Methane pollution, deforestation 5. Geothermal Energy Adv: Reliable, naturally occurring so no fossil fuel required Dis: Location restricted, digging for this process may release harmful gases that are stored underground, cost, earthquakes 6. Wind Energy Adv: Cost effective, job creation, renewable Dis: Fluctuations of wind, NIMBYism, threat to wildlife habitats Hope this helps!
