Hi Jeniffer, So the main thing that the government did was convert the peacetime industries into war time industries. What this means is that factories that were used to make products sold around the USA were converted into manufacturing plants for military equipment and weapons. Some examples of this would be The Lionel toy train company which began making warship items like compasses and Ford making liberator bombers They also did this as they needed to conserve as much metal possible in order to built this equipment eg guns , aircraft. Rationing was put in place fir civilians on luxury items so as to conserve other materials deemed essential for way such as rubber , paper , plastic , petroleum. There were about 3 million automobiles manufactured in the USA in 1941 ( they were also supplying the UK and soviet Union) but there were only 139 additional cars made in the whole duration of the war.
