Oliver is taken in by Mr Sowerberry who is a likeable man. Having moved out of the workhouse, this was sure to be a relief for Oliver. However, Mrs Sowerberry and her children treat Oliver harshly. Noah is jealous of Oliver and insults him, this in turn leads Oliver to become involved in an altercation. Consequently, Mr Sowerberry beats Oliver, who then runs away. So what initially was a welcome escape for Oliver from the cruel environment of the workhouse, leads to Oliver become embroiled in an environment where he is mistreated once again. Consequently Oliver is left vulnerable on the streets of London.
