PHYSICS
Asked by Tim

How has the composition of the earth's atmosphere changed over time?

It is believed the early atmosphere was formed from gases given out by volcanoes. Thus the atmosphere was mainly CO2. Then as the earth cooled down due to less CO2, water vapour condensed to form oceans. The reduction in C02 levels was due to photosynthesis from plants which converted it into oxygen. Some CO2 was locked into sedimentary rocks and some dissolved into the oceans.
