# What is the difference Between a transverse and a longitudinal wave?

I have answered this already but briefly again longitudinal wave is when particles move inline with the wave progression such as sound waves and transverse wave is when particles oscillate perpendicular to the wave motion or progression examples are string vibration and surface wave when you throw a pebble in the water

Longitudinal Waves: A wave where displacement/oscillation (of particles) is parallel to the direction of energy transfer. Example: Sound waves Longitudinal waves have areas of compression and rarefaction: A compression is a region in a longitudinal wave where the particles are closest together. A rarefaction is a region in a longitudinal wave where the particles are furthest apart. Transverse Waves: A wave where displacement/oscillation (of particles) is perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. Examples: surface water waves, waves on a string, electromagnetic waves.

Transverse Waves is when the vibration or displacement of the medium is perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave. An example of this is strong vibration and a ripple in a pond. Longitudinal Waves is when the vibration or displacement of the medium is parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave or along the axis. Sound is an example of longitudinal wave since the air particles oscillate in the direction of transmission.
