US midterm elections are called midterms as they are held in the middle of a President’s term. Senators serve for 6 years, with 1/3 of the chamber up for election every 2 years, whilst Congressmen serve for 2 years before being put up for election again. Due to these timings, it is inevitable that an election will occur in the middle of a President’s 4 year term.
