Hi Richard, The sun's energy is required for algae to survive. The shortest wavelength of the sun's radiation is the blue light and this can travel the furthest down the ocean depth. Phycoerythrin is a pigment which can absorb this wavelength of radiation and is found in red algae. Therefore, red algae is most likely to be found in the deepest water.
