Red shifted galaxies as a result of the distortion of light coming from them due to the Doppler effect. As the universe expands in pulls all the points of space away from each other which causes waves of light to essentially be stretched. Stretching increases the wavelength of the light waves coming from these galaxies and makes them appear red since red light has a longer wavelength.
