What is cell senescence?Describe the mechanism?

Hi Hema! hopefully I can help you with your question as I completed a research project relating to cell senescence at university. Cells in the body can divide and replace one another for the repair and renewal of tissues. However, aging, stress and DNA damage can cause a cell to undergo senescence - which is the irreversible growth of arrest of the cell. This basically means that the cell stops dividing. cell senescence can be a protective mechanism for an organism because it means that a faulty, old or damaged cell can no longer replicate and damage the tissue/ organism. however research has also shown that some senescent cells can release chemicals which can cause inflammation to nearby cells
