The use of checklists and achievement charts is highly effective in helping to support student learning. They help encourage the child to play an active role, not only in their assessments, but also in their learning process. By having the objectives and criteria established along side the child, it helps them to progress as they will have a better understanding of what they need to do. They can also be beneficial to show to parents/caregivers as they can see the improvement in their child over time and gives them a level of organisation that perhaps was lacking prior. In children with special needs, often executive functions (e.g controlling their behaviour) are missing. By providing a checklist, it helps to provide them with strategies which help them to overcome these weaknesses which is really important.
