A connotation is a commonly understood cultural or emotional association that some word or phrase carries, in addition to its literal meaning. 

So a lady is a woman (literal) but the polite, more cultured term for the person. Similarly, gentleman is the more polite, cultured term for its literal counterpart: man.

It’s best not to describe the dinosaurs as It becomes overly factual, unoriginal, and most people will think of the films anyway. I would recommend writing a short incident where you were almost hurt: 

1. Where it happened? 
2. Which dinosaur did it concern? 
3. What happened? 
4. How you felt? 
5. How you got away? 

If you write it as an intense, short story, it’ll work. The thriller element to it is actually what made the films successful. 

Whatever you write, I’m sure you can write a better story concerning the Park than the writers did for Jurassic World.

Try to start your work as soon as possible while taking frequent breaks to let your mind rest. Closing your phone or social media while you do you homework might help too. 
Being heavily unmotivated and having low mood can be the reason you are not getting the marks you would like and could affect your life in many ways so make sure you are taking care of yourself and your mental health. 

For whatever reason, we don’t do what we’re meant to do. I’m sorry you’re in this predicament but don’t worry, you can still make the most of it! 

A-levels are very difficult exams so to do two new ones in one year when they’re designed to be done over two years is asking a bit too much of yourself. A lot of colleges and 6th forms will not allow you to do this anyway. If so, you’ll have to pay for the exams yourself and study for them yourself.

I don’t think it would be realistic for you to pursue this path, especially after falling short on the A-levels you chose and did over two years. 

If you can’t find a degree at a university you’re happy with then it’s best if you take a gap year and retake those exams and simply try again. 

The worst thing you can do is simply go to university for the sake of it. Short-term satisfaction over long-term gain is never the way to go. There’s nothing wrong in taking a gap year so long as you use it productively. It’s better you take one or two years more to graduate in a degree you enjoy from a university with a good reputation than to graduate a year or two earlier in a degree and from an institution you’re not entirely happy with. 

Of course, the decision is ultimately yours and if you feel you can do it then I wish you all the best with it!

The problem stems from the fact that the first part of the sentence (the subordinate clause ‘born in Russia’) doesn’t have an explicit subject, although from the context you’d expect it to be a person. 

The next words you see (‘his most famous opera’) are the subject of the sentence, but they clearly don’t match the preceding clause, because an opera cannot be born (unless one was writing figuratively). 

This sort of clause/sentence is unattached, misrelated or simply: dangling.

It really depends in what jurisdiction you wish to practise.

The most potent and thriving legal industries are in England and Germany and if you look at the university rankings in those respective countries, you will come to know the leading universities. With respect to England, you should check The Guardian, The Times and QS Rankings to get a fair understanding of a university’s reputation. 

England has the best universities internationally and a more streamlined degree. Whereas in Germany and many European countries, the degrees are four years and many do not offer it as an undergraduate or in English. Having said that, higher education is virtually free. 

Everyone has their own set of circumstances, preferences, goals and ambitions. You should do what is best for you.

Best universities to study law in the UK? And Europe?

1. I know about the tragedy of Grenfell Tower as much as any person who follows the news. If you are not aware of the facts, you can easily find out by Googling ‘What exactly happened at Grenfell Tower?’ This will give you a breakdown of the tragedy insofar as we understand it at this point in time. We can’t know for sure as an investigation is in process. 

2. From a legal perspective, the main parties being held responsible are the local council, the housing association and the building contractors. It’s a little complicated as it requires determining who was responsible for what and its connection to the actual fire and the spreading of it. Nonetheless, corporate manslaughter is the most severe charge being brought forward against the parties. 

3. This is a criminal and civil case (with respect to monetary damages). Ethically speaking, it is a human right of ours to be safe from such a disaster which is why we have such strong laws in place to protect us and severe consequences when we are failed. This is why it is not a human rights case because our right as human beings to be safe and protected is enshrined in law. 

4. The fact that there were basic failures in health and safety measures with respect to the internal and external structure of the building means that the fire was definitely containable which then of-course makes the tragedy itself completely avoidable. 

5. I think you should explore the legal, social and political ramifications of the tragedy on not only the residents and community in that area, but on society as a whole - if your project allows (it’ll certainly score you points). 

I can’t give you a fully detailed response to your question here, for obvious reasons, but I hope I’ve given you enough of a direction and enough ideas to help build your project. I’m sure you’ll find it fascinating even if at times it’ll be sad and even infuriating.

Law firms offer Vacation Schemes so you have to apply for those. They prioritise 2nd/3rd year university law students and the deadline for those are mostly Dec/Jan. However, if it’s a high street law firm, then going in person with a cover letter and CV may do the trick. You should highlight what you wish to gain from the experience, what you have to offer and what was it about the law firm itself that has got you to make this effort. 

As for chambers, the formal process is applying for a mini-pupillage but those are extremely competitive. If you know a barrister or can arrange a way of knowing a barrister at the chambers, they can easily arrange it for you by bypassing the process. They will ask for your CV so make sure it’s good! 

If you’re not in university, it’s very difficult to get work experience without using backdoors and personal networks. Law firms and chambers have very little to offer for under 18s.  

Nonetheless, it’s worth a shot so good luck! 

How would I structure a cold letter to a law firm or barristers chambers (strictly for work experience)?

You have to analyse the purpose of the source, the context of the source, the author’s/publication’s background and find information from both sources which create debate. 

Question: Did the British give India independence or was it forced to? 

If we have a source written by a British author regarding the British Empire soon after the Second World War, one can assume the purpose of the source is to view the Empire’s impact positively. You will then need to find quotes in the source to support this claim.

The second source may be written by an Indian historian writing about the Raj. We can assume it will be in favour of the latter part of the question and we can find quotes to support this claim. 

You will use each quote to make a point which will then be supported by secondary knowledge - what you know outside the sources. So you can find historical evidence where the British weren’t forced to give independence to support the first source and find evidence were they were forced to support the second source. 

You should always refer back to the question or you will veer off topic. At the end, you must reach a judgement. With respect to the question I’ve referred to here, I’d conclude by saying it was actually the Second World War which forced them to give up India as the British no longer had the means to maintain its empire. So in a way, they gave it to the Indians. 

If you continually refer to the source material and dissect any quote you use whilst showing off relevant historical knowledge to support your points and reach a conclusion on the question posed, you will receive high marks. 

Just practise and you’ll get the hang of it.

What is the most effective method of answering source based questions in A-level History, especially when comparing two sources?

You use an apostrophe to denote possession or contraction. 

Possession: 

Singular - This is Bob's watch 
Plural - These are the soldiers' watches 

If the word prior to an apostrophe ends with s anyway then you can place the apostrophe after the s like you would in the plural form or you can put an additional s after the apostrophe like you would in the singular form. 

For example, 
This is Charles' watch 
Or 
This is Charles's watch 

They are both acceptable but you should choose one and keep to it. 

Contraction: 

When you want to make two words into one, you contract using an apostrophe. 

For example, 
Don't is short for 'Do not' 

However, contractions should never be used in a formal piece of writing, like A-level essays!



When should I use apostrophes?

The difference between a college and sixth form is that a sixth form is with a secondary school and only teaches further education to students upto the age of 18. A college will usually offer further education to any age. 

Every sixth form and college has different standards with respect to entry. For example, to pursue Maths you may be required to have an 8 in the subject at GCSE. So it’s for you to find out. 

You can do A-levels or BTEC qualifications to get into university or you can avoid those paths altogether and instead use your GCSEs to go directly into work or get yourself an Apprenticeship.
