First and foremost, I would explain what functionalists views upon education are. We know that functionalist believe that education has a crucial role in society: helps to provide secondary socialisation, teaches norms and values etc 

The functionalist theory of education focuses on how education serves the needs of society through development of skills, encouraging social cohesion and sorting of students. According to functionalists, the role of schools is to prepare students for participation in the institutions of society.

Hi Meg, Functionalists view education as one of the more important social institutions in a society. They contend that education contributes two kinds of functions: manifest (or primary) functions, which are the intended and visible functions of education; and latent (or secondary) functions, which are the hidden and unintended functions. Functionalists recognize other ways that schools educate and enculturate students. Functionalists also contend that school, particularly in recent years, is taking over some of the functions that were traditionally undertaken by family. Society relies on schools to teach about human sexuality as well as basic skills such as budgeting and job applications—topics that at one time were addressed by the family.

The New Right would blame the proletariat for the increase in crime in society. They believe in the idea that the working class have failed to socialise correctly and therefore break the norms and values of society. The lack of successful socialisation can lead to a failure in education, resulting in crime to feel as if they belong to a group in society.

Although ‘cleverer’ is a word it sounds more professional to use ‘more clever’

Two syllable adjectives generally use 'more' rather than adding an -er suffix, so generally we would say 'more clever'. Cleverer is technically a word, but we would not tend to use it in everyday speech.

Hi! The most important thing to achieve the best grade in English literature would be to read and understand the specification. It is important that you know what the examiner is looking for and then implement this into your work.

Hi there, 

I'd recommend writing out key quotes and themes on colour coded post-it notes/flash cards. You could also do a mind map breaking down different themes within the books or plays you are studying, with important quotes and analysis of the quotes. 

Hi ! I would recommend to make little note cards. For each book or text, make a card describing: title, author, date of publication, a few quotes, and the characters. You can even add a small resume of the story. Play with it ! Add colors, drawings... anything that can help you have fun with it, but also remember without you realising it.

When revising for English Literature I would recommend you to: 
1. Write a bunch of short quotes with explanations on the meaning of the quote and context on the quote so that if you get an exam question on it, you will easily be able to use this. 
2. This may sound unusual but do learn how to write fast. Many students tend to lose out in a lot of time due to them writing slowly. You can avoid this by doing timed essay questions every week.

Rewrite short quotes.
Place post it notes around the house to help remember details and information when for example your brushing your teeth. 
Create a song/poem for character details/events/themes/scenes.


So with each text you will have key themes and characters, for each of these make a flash card and write down some key quotes you could use in an essay. Mr Bruff has some fantastic videos on most texts which are very helpful. It’s best to just learn a few quotes you can use for almost any question and then find out how you like to structure your answers. Also practice exam questions as often as you can as exams usually repeat similar questions so you could already answer your final exam question in practice
