Generally speaking, there are two types of assessments:

1) Formative: this type of assessment is informal and ongoing - it is used in the form of small quizzes, exit tickets, mini-whiteboard tasks, etc. - the advantage of this is that a teacher can have a continuous feedback on how well their class understands a given topic - super important!

2) Summative: these are the more formal exams we're all familiar with, such as SATs, GCSEs, etc. This helps employers understand the different skillsets individuals have, as well as universities - education's key goal is to help prepare people for the job market so that they can contribute to the economy, and they do this via contributing to the output of their employer.

Disadvantages: can you really capture a person's skillset through a set of grades? Likely not!

What are the advantages and disadvantages of assessment in schools

We can complete this in a few different ways. The easiest requires us to understand that we can change percentages into decimals.

100% = 1 (if you multiply something by 1, you still have that same original amount)
10% = 0.1 (1 divided by 10 is 0.1)
1%  = 0.01 (0.1 divided by 10 is 0.01)

So 4% = 0.04.

If we want to increase an amount by a percentage, we find that amount (in this case 4%), and add it on to the original.

So we start with 100% (1) and we add on 4% (0.04), that gives us 1.04.

Hence, we if multiply 14,120 by 1.04 (which is just another way of writing 100% + 4% = 104%), we get to an answer of:

£14,684.80 (remembering that it's to two decimal places!)
