What are derivatives?

A derivative describes the rate of change of a function with respect to a variable. That’s quite the mouthful and without seeing what happens in terms of a picture, there’s no (good) short explanation for what a derivative is! I will do my best though. Suppose you have a graph of y=f(x). Then mark two distinct (different) points P1=(x1,f(x1)) and P2=(x2,f(x2)) on this graph. The ratio between the... more

How do I increase a decimal ???? HELP 😭?

A decimal is a number, so one way to increase it would be to add one to it. Other (creative) ways to increase it could be to divide it by a 0.1 or add it to itself. Because the question is not very specific, it is difficult for me to give a helpful answer. If you would comment the specific reason for increasing the decimal I’d be happy to give a better answer.

What are prime numbers ?

Think about a wall made of bricks. Each brick cannot be reduced in size and each brick is important to the wall. In maths, a prime number does the same job as one of those bricks. Except, instead of building a wall, a prime number builds a whole number such as 190 or 21. The exact definition of a prime number has already been given in a different answer to this question. However my answer should... more

Express 24 as a product of prime factors?

To answer questions like this, there are two stages. First, you should write down a list of the first 6 or 7 prime numbers. These prime numbers are 2,3,5,7,11,13,17. To find the prime factorisation of 24, check if 2 divides into 24. It does, because 24=12*2. Repeat this check for 12 now (here 12 is called the quotient). 2 does divide 12 because 12=6*2. Repeat this check for 6 now. 2 does divide 6... more

What is the best university to study engineering?

There are lots of different factors that you should consider when applying for Engineering. For the type of Engineering you want to choose, you might want to specialise straight away or you might want to try different branches of Engineering before you specialise. In the first case, if you already know which branch of Engineering you would like to do, some universities will be better at Mechanical... more

How do I do math?

To do Math in school, you need to practice. However, to really do math you need to constantly ask why? For example, 2+1=3, but why? At this point you could draw a number line and show why pictorially. Although you could then ask what even are the numbers 1 and 2, so a number line argument can still be improved. Any teacher who understands the math that you want to understand will be able to tell... more

How do you work out square roots?

To find an approximate value for the square root of a number N, you can find the closest square number smaller than N and the closest square number larger than N. The square roots of the square numbers will be easy to calculate and should be 1 apart. The square root of N will be some number between the square roots of each square. To find N by trial and error you could then just try different numb... more
