Why do both parents need to have a recessive copy of a gene in order for the offspring to inherit it?
If you think about a punnett square, if both parents have the heterozygous gene Rr for example, then there is a 25% chance that the homozygous recessive gene rr will be expressed in the offspring But if one of the parents was homozygous dominant RR then it is not possible to produce rr on it's own, and it will always be overcome by the dominant gene
