Gergana Popova
Online lessonsMaths and Photography tutor
Hello! My name is Gergana. Iโve recently finished my bachelor degree in Cinematography at New Bulgarian University and moved to London for an internship. I need extra financial support while I follow the steps of becoming a full-time Cinematographer, so I decided that after a little break, I can get my study books into action again. Iโve developed my interest in Mathematics in primary school and my teachers guided me to The Sofia High School of Mathematics as my secondary school. My parents didnโt find it necessary for me to get so involved with this subject at the age of 11, but they supported my choice. This school has their own study books for their entrance exams so that at that age of 11 you can solve System of linear equations disguised as a game. After a summer of extensive problem solving, in September 2005, Iโve passed the exam together with 89 other kids, out of 1200 applies. After three years there, having 8 hours of Mathematics a week, I had to take a new set of exams in order to choose a High-school (the equivalent of UK college). Iโve decided to stay in the same institute and have 10 hours of Maths per week for the next 5 years. During this time, Iโve participated in numerous national and international mathematics competition. I got selected for International Junior Science Olympiad in South Korea in 2008 and Azerbaijan in 2009, as one of 6 kids to represent Bulgaria for the first and second time in this competition. While being busy calculating how many apples Iโll have if I eat 2 for breakfast and one for a snack, I started fencing in my free time. I developed an interest in that and got my first national medal in 2006, after only a few months of practising. This motivated me to spend all my free time in the fencing hall and all my weekends were busy going either to a mathematics or fencing competitions. Later on, my studies won over my athleteโs career and I gave up competing but started refereeing. At the age of 17 I got my national refereeing license in Epee and at the age of 23, I got my Olympic level. Ever since Iโve started, fencing has always been a big part of my life - to the extent that during my first year of University I got offered to get trained as a coach. After I finished my training, I started coaching part-time, to financially support my studies. In January 2016, I found myself in Budapest, starting a 3-month course in fencing coaching, organised by the International Fencing Federation. During that time, apart from the practical education, I had classes by Budapest University of Physical Education in Psychology, Pedagogy, Physiology and Sports Management. My experience as a fencing coach included teaching kids in multiple different schools between ages 7-10, a nursery and a fencing club. At the club, I had groups of studentโs aged between 5 and 60+, many of whom are on the national team. My club also sent me around Europe to accompany some of them on fencing competitions and camps. During my time as a coach I have worked with people from all backgrounds and with all levels of ability, and I am more than happy to work with the young and old! I am a huge believer in everyone being great at something, and I believe that it is my responsibility as a teacher to unlock that greatness, in either sport or maths. Since a very young age, I was interested in photography. The studies on optics in my physics classes extended my knowledge about lenses and how cameras work in general. This led to a 4-year bachelor degree in Cinematography. This field is much more technical than people think, with a lot of the work being about finding the right angle and the amount of exposure to have. While the creative side is the one bringing fame, the theory of light and colour, you need to spend years assisting, assembling cameras and cleaning lenses, as well as learning all the correct equations for finding the perfect shot. What I like about this career is that except for having a good eye for composition and perspective, you need to be up to date with latest technology and how it works, which keeps my hidden geek happy. I can spend hours poring over the newest cameras or reading up on the state of the art lighting rigs. As a conclusion, I still enjoy solving maths problems as some sort of crossword or a puzzle and I have a background as an instructor, so consider meeting me for a tutoring session. :)
