Enthusiastic tutor in chemistry and maths

I have graduated from high school in the UK and am currently studying Medicine at UCL. I am very interested in science subjects, and have taken them in A levels, receiving 3A*s. I would therefore like to share my ways of studying as well as exam techniques. I am a curious and enthusiastic individual who is particularly interested in Chemistry. I have been involved in Chemical Analytical Challenges and Symposiums. At school, I have also given biology presentations, including topics of epilepsy and effects of chocolate on the brain. I enjoy learning about the human system as it allows me to understand fully on how our body responds to different situations. I also had the experience of teaching Mathematics, alongside sciences. I have achieved A* within a year in A level maths, with UMS 581/600. I relish the logical thinking in Maths and have tutored several students, giving them advice on how to approach a question when prompted. From past experiences, I adopted a wide range of teaching styles, ranging from interactive whiteboards during online tutoring, to providing quizzes and exercises during face-to-face tutoring. I believe that this interaction will enhance visual learning and enable students to retain knowledge and be more interested in the subject. I am a native Chinese speaker and have taken Chinese GCSE and AS level. In my free time, I am an avid violinist and was the leader of Symphony Orchestra. I have taken music as one of my GCSEs before and I particularly enjoyed the classical pieces studied during the course. Hi, my name is Abdur and I’m currently studying Dentistry at the University of Bristol. I’d describe myself as a kind and friendly person who loves to teach using evidence-based techniques. As a dental student, a lot of my time is spent learning but also teaching others as it reinforces the knowledge I’ve gained from lectures, seminars and clinical sessions. I’d describing my style of teaching as interactive and personal as everyone has their own way of grasping topics. What sets my teaching apart from others is that it integrates core topics and links the common themes which cements the information to a deeper level of understanding. This is something I’ve used in my own studies which has helped me to ranked in the top 10 for the end of Year 1 exams and over achieve over 70% in end of Year 2 exams. I have been tutoring and mentoring students since 2016. What I’ve learnt from this experience is that building confidence in students is one of the key components to boosting grades. I highlight strengths and weaknesses so we can reinforce the areas which require more attention. This is through evidence-based teaching called active recall. The purpose of this method is to stimulate the mind through questioning rather than passive learning. Passive learning is something many students are guilty of which often leads to average grades. Through active learning it highlights areas that requires more attention. Spaced repetition will help to prevent forgetting important information and enables long term storage of knowledge which is crucial for exams!

‘Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.’

I have a very unique way of teaching and that is ‘the training of the mind to think’. As I specialise in English Literature and language, ‘training the mind to think’ is crucial and allows students to think outside the box, exploring avenues that may have never been explored before. This is seen in my success rates of tutoring throughout the years, in subjects such as English literature and language, Chemistry and Biology. I have improved GCSE students grades by 2-3 grades every year round. Being the first cohort doing the new 9-1 GCSE examinations, I achieved a grade 9 for both English literature and language. This means that I have a first hand experience on what the exams are like, what examiners are looking for, how to handle workload and memorise poems and quotes from books, and how to achieve great results. In order to develop English skills, I frequently encourage asking questions, with this, lessons do not become a one way street and the student is encouraged to probe away in order to reach a conclusion for themselves. I try to teach a student the qualities of, and then to prioritise deduction and reasoning, something I have found is becoming ever more important in current exams. I strive to build confidence in students by securing knowledge and understanding and then frequently applying this to new scenarios, including independent work designed for strong consolidation. This of course includes inspiring an interest in the subject at hand, attempting to help the student recognise how truly fun learning such useful subjects can be, especially in noticing how they relate to daily life.
