Hi, I am Nuno, a professional London-based drummer, with plenty of performing and teaching experience. I graduated from a BMus Popular Music Performance degree at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in 2019, and I've been playing and studying music, and more specifically drums for 16 years. In that time, I've been involved in several bands and other projects, and I've taught drums and percussion to people with ages ranging from 4 to 55. I also work in a drum shop/studio, and I have been a drums auditioning tutor in ICMP since 2019. For 10 years I've been playing guitar and bass, too and have managed to use those skills to write and record my own music. As such, I've gained experience in both songwriting, recording and producing music. I am passionate about music and drums, and also very excited to pass on the knowledge I've acquired over all these years. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN GUITAR Beginner Guitarists I believe it’s important to help beginners acquire a foundational knowledge of chord shapes and basic guitar techniques as quickly as possible so they can start playing music and learning songs immediately. By focusing on building repertoire instead of technical exercises during these early stages, students will find it easier to remain enthusiastic, and new techniques and ideas can be introduced gradually through real music. They will also learn how to practice efficiently, so they can continue to see progress in their playing even when practice time is limited. Repertoire Right from the start, students will learn to play music they are passionate about; I always help students to select pieces/songs that will be both challenging and rewarding for them. They will also be given the opportunity to receive a grounding in various popular guitar styles—blues, rock, funk, R&B, country, jazz, fusion, reggae, folk etc.—becoming confident accompanists and soloists in a wide variety of musical contexts. Fretboard Knowledge As they progress, students will learn more chord and scale patterns, enabling them to read charts and opening the door to improvising with confidence. They will also learn about the CAGED system, and how to use it to mentally organise the fretboard so as to accommodate their growing vocabulary of patterns. In addition, they will learn how to read standard notation, and how to identify intervals, chord types and progressions by ear and on paper, facilitating faster song-learning and more accurate recall as they begin to recognise familiar sounds and shapes everywhere. Guitar Technique Aside from making sure they develop clean technique when fretting notes, muting and picking strings—and that they don’t acquire any habits that might lead to long-term injury—guitar techniques will be explored extensively as the student advances. They will learn: alternate, economy and sweep picking, pickslant and string-escape strategies, crosspicking, fingerstyle guitar, hybrid picking, legato, string-bending and vibrato, as well as extended techniques such as right-hand and two-handed tapping, playing slide guitar, artificial harmonics, waterfall harmonics and more. PIANO Beginners New pianists will be introduced to their instrument and written music in an easy, step-by-step progression so they become comfortable reading note names, rhythms, accidentals, key signatures, time signatures, clefs etc. over time—while also learning to play fun tunes along the way! From the start, they will be taught how to position themselves at the piano to encourage good posture, and how to use their fingers, hands and wrists in a way that provides control over the instrument without generating unnecessary tension or risking injury over time. They will also learn how to structure their practice time, especially those preparing for grade exams where each section of the exam requires dedicated practice. Repertoire I help all my students to select pieces they will enjoy playing, while also being challenged so they continue to grow as pianists. In addition, they will be encouraged to develop fluent sight-reading skills and to explore a wide variety of musical styles. Technique and Theory Whilst technical exercises and music theory have a bit of a bad reputation as enthusiasm-killers, it doesn’t have to be that way! They form an essential part of general musicianship for pianists, and students will discover they can be fun and easy to digest when taught correctly! SONGWRITING, COMPOSITION AND THEORY Many musicians find themselves trying to write lyrics, or songs or instrumental pieces of their own after learning an instrument for some time. Very often they start to find musical ideas coming to them, but don’t know how to develop these ideas, or how to structure an entire piece of music. I believe the best way to learn the crafts of both songwriting and composition, while also nurturing individual creativity, is a combination of learning about form and compositional techniques, analysing existing masterpieces to find out what makes them so special, and good old-fashioned learning-by-doing! Some of the topics students will have the opportunity to cover: Lyric Writing Songwriting students will learn strategies for brainstorming and organising lyrical ideas; finding interesting rhymes; alternative types of rhymes; creating worksheets; the role of different song sections as it relates to lyric-writing; meter and rhyme schemes; prosody and the connection between lyrics, melodic shape and rhythm. Melody What makes a melody easily-singable; what the various types of conventional melodic figuration are (passing-tones, neighboring tones, suspensions, anticipations, eschapee, appoggiatura, cambiata); syncopation and its role in popular melody-writing; riff-writing and building solos. Harmony and Counterpoint A full course on functional harmony, modal harmony, and basic substitutions; chromaticism and chromatic techniques; species counterpoint, and prolongational techniques; four-part writing procedures; advanced countrapuntal techniques such as imitation, shifting counterpoint, canonic and fugal techniques. Form The relationship between harmony, counterpoint and form; song form; the components of songs (verse, chorus, refrain, bridge/transition, intro, outro, hook etc.); conventional theme types (periods, sentences, hybrids, ternary themes etc.) and their common deviations; large-scale forms (sonata, rondo etc.); how the needs for variety and comprehensibility work to organise all music. I’m also able to teach students about arranging, recording and production, and they will have the opportunity to record their songs in my studio if they wish.

In 2019, I passed my A Levels with 3A*s in French, Latin, and Spanish, and I have 12 GCSEs (9A* and 3A). I also hold ARSM Diplomas with Distinction in Singing and Flute performance, and Grade 8 Piano with distinction. I have experience as a tutor and teaching assistant, having spent my gap year as a teaching assistant for French, Latin and Music in a London prep school, and having run a Spanish club in a local primary school and French revision clinics for younger students whilst still studying at school. I am offering 1 to 1 tutoring for French, Latin and Spanish (up to A Level standard), Ancient Greek (up to GCSE standard), English and Maths (primary school/Common Entrance standard), and music lessons tailored to your needs, whether it is as a beginner or working for a specific exam (up to GCSE). A Little about me I started playing the guitar at the age of 13 and shortly after that, I discovered an interest in singing and performing. After playing with various cover bands throughout high school as a singer and guitarist, I decided to move to Vienna, to study jazz and contemporary music at Vienna Music Institute. Upon graduating from there, I relocated to London to pursue a career in music and teaching. In the spring of 2017, I received my Bachelor’s degree in Popular Music Performance from ICMP London. The skills I have learned from my degree are as follows: -I am a competent reader, able to sight read music for musical theatre, jazz and latin arrangements -I have an in depth knowledge of a wide range of styles: Jazz, Latin, Funk, Orchestral, Rock, German oompah music! -I gig regularly, in all of the styles above, I am often called at short notice to dep gigs when the main drummer can't make it. -My ears have improved greatly by going to jazz jams, attending lots of gigs, seeing how the pros do it! -My university was more like an academy, meaning it was 95% practical, in my final year I was in every day 9am-9pm, rehearsing or doing individual practice, the improvement in my playing would not have been equalled had I done a more academic degree. -My ability to work in a team and just communicate with other people has greatly improved. In my final year I was asked by a lot of my peers to play for their recitals, I was overwhelmed with work but managed to pull through, and as a result I have created a good reputation for myself and a long list of musical contacts, something very valuable. -I have grade 5 music theory, putting it to practical use by writing music for string quartet, jazz combos and salsa bands. I have also created backing tracks for my own original music. -Using electronic sounds within a normal acoustic set-up is something i do regularly now. I often have a metronome in my ears on live gigs, and have to play specific electronic sounds in time through a Roland SPDSX, this gives me the ability to replicate specific sounds from studio versions of tracks. I come from a family where music is extremely important. At school, my first band was a rock covers band where my brother played bass. We played regularly in pubs in Dorset, (you may have heard of the Teddy Rocks festival, we played in the very first festival and have played with my band Last Resort ever since). My first teacher was keen for me to learn how to read music, meaning I could play in school orchestras for musicals. I have 2 Grade 8 distinctions, one from Rockshool and one from Trinity Guildhall, I did the rockschool one first and then thought it best to add the Trinity one! The rock band i was in still plays, we have an EP online and continue to write original music. Having just finished uni, I am keen to start my musical career ASAP, I want to stay in London, because it has the best music scene in Europe!! My teaching has reading and listening at it's heart. The best thing I have done since coming to London is open my ears to all the styles I didn't like, listen over and over, until they started to grow on me! Music is a cultural and historical lesson as well, it's interesting to see where the popular styles of today came from! Reading will just make you more employable as all the session, musical theatre and holiday camp drummers will tell you! I use software such as Noteflight which allows me to playback scores, making sight reading an easier and more enjoyable process, and meaning I can share scores with students via email. Each student is also given a video recording of what we studied in the lesson, which is a very valuable resource, something they can take away from each lesson, and makes remembering what we learned much easier!
