Psychology with Counselling Skills I love to teach Psychology and Counselling Skill. I use my psychology skills to help my students, using mindfulness and due care to positively encourage learning. At the same time a spoonful of fun can help engage the student making learning interesting for my students. I have good knowledge in the mentioned fields and will support my student through the thick and thin of their studies. I have a 2.1 degree, and am also able to relate to students who are dyslexic and can help in providing different approaches to learning. I am also competent in teaching Geography and English. I am dedicated to supporting the people I tutor as I am passionate about the subjects I teach. I understand the pressure of being a student and the pains of trying to reach deadlines. I also empathise when words are hard to put together when trying to get an essay done. From secondary school level to research to literature reviews to dissertation, my aim is to see the student through to graduation. If there is a problem with meeting in person, I can accept doing Skype lessons, which has proved a success with previous students. We found that as we talk about the subject, I can quickly tap in the information or research and immediately email links and literature to help the student. I will set my students homework between sessions, setting manageable homework, with adequate time for completion. I often ensure that I have a thorough undertanding of students work load, and will work with them to ensure that their time is being managed effectively. With younger students it is often the case of focusing in on elements of the entrance exams they are weaker with as many students score inconsistently across the four disciplines. Ideally tutoring should form part of a well-rounded curriculum which incorporates many elements such as sports/recreational activities, museum trips, reading around the subject all of which I will actively encourage during the lessons. I often like to give an indication of how long students would need tuition for. This is to ensure that dependancy on the tutor is discouraged and students are empowered to eventually take charge of their own learning. Tutoring sessions are varied and include learning, note taking, revision, discussion, exam technique and test questions. These are tailored to the individual student. I often get my older students to write responses and then show them ways in which the question could be answered or interpreted differently. This allows for increased dexterity therefore building confidence both for class work and examinations. With younger students lots of practice tests and mock questions form the main basis of enhancing their performance. Cambridge offer holder, I always push my students to reach the full height of their potential and it is this continual focus on improving which leads to my students outperforming their expectations and achieving consistently high top results. I have a very unique way of teaching and that is ‘the training of the mind to think’. As I specialise in English Literature and language, ‘training the mind to think’ is crucial and allows students to think outside the box, exploring avenues that may have never been explored before. This is seen in my success rates of tutoring throughout the years, in subjects such as English literature and language, Chemistry and Biology. I have improved GCSE students grades by 2-3 grades every year round. Being the first cohort doing the new 9-1 GCSE examinations, I achieved a grade 9 for both English literature and language. This means that I have a first hand experience on what the exams are like, what examiners are looking for, how to handle workload and memorise poems and quotes from books, and how to achieve great results. In order to develop English skills, I frequently encourage asking questions, with this, lessons do not become a one way street and the student is encouraged to probe away in order to reach a conclusion for themselves. I try to teach a student the qualities of, and then to prioritise deduction and reasoning, something I have found is becoming ever more important in current exams. I strive to build confidence in students by securing knowledge and understanding and then frequently applying this to new scenarios, including independent work designed for strong consolidation. This of course includes inspiring an interest in the subject at hand, attempting to help the student recognise how truly fun learning such useful subjects can be, especially in noticing how they relate to daily life.
