Apple faces a lot of competition from major competitors like Samsung and Google. They have a strong presence in the market, but they have to continue innovating to keep their customers happy. Otherwise, they risk losing customers to their competition. They do this in a few ways:

1. Excellent customer service. 
2. Yearly releases of new phones. 
3. They release products that work well together. Someone who has a Mac, an iPad and an iPhone depends on Apple a lot. They'll be a lot less likely to leave in this case.

What is an octave?

An IPO stands for "Initial Public Offering". When a company IPO's, you (and most other people) can buy and sell small pieces of it (called shares). Owning shares of a company means that they will actually share their profit with you.

Target, Walmart, and Google are example companies (there are thousands). If you have one $700 share in Google, you will be entitled to a pro-rata share in their profits (about $22 per year). 

Companies sell these shares to raise money for projects, to make it easier to pay employees, and for other reasons. We call such companies “public companies”, and members of the public can buy or sell them.

What is an IPO and why is it a big deal when a company goes public?

Both the hypothesis statement and the thesis statement answer a research question. 

A hypothesis is a statement that can be proved or disproved. It is typically used in quantitative research and predicts the relationship between variables.
 
A thesis statement is a short, direct sentence that summarizes the main point or claim of an essay or research paper. It is seen in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research. A thesis statement is developed, supported, and explained in the body of the essay or research report by means of examples and evidence.

As an additional note, a good hypothesis will be written as a statement or question that specifies:

The dependent variable(s): who or what you expect to be affected. 

The independent variable(s): who or what you predict will affect the dependent variable
What you predict the effect will be.

Even though the words sound similar, they are very different.

Subsidy:

Definition - Money that is given by the government (or other public bodies) to support an industry or organisation. It is usually done to encourage the consumption or production of a good or service.

Example 1 - “The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)“. To encourage European farmers to grow produce, the government will buy excess produce each year at a fixed price.  CAP is usually referred to in A-Level Economics so it’s worth having a good understanding of this.

Example 2 - Education in the UK is free until the age of 18. This is because the government subsidises the entire cost.

Substitute:

Definition: If the demand of one good increases (Good X) due to a rise on price of another good (Good Y), this good is a substitute good.

Example 1 - When the price of Coke goes up, the demand for Pepsi increases because Pepsi is substitute for Coke.

What is the difference between a subsidy and a substitute?

The formula is:

Average Cost (AC) = Total Cost (TC) / Quantity (Q)

Example:

If it costs Apple £120 to make the first 1000 iPhone X's, and then £100 to make the next 1000, what is the average cost of producing an iPhone X?

1. The first 1000 cost £120,000 (1000 x £120)
2. The next 1000 cost £100,000 (1000 x £100)
3. The total cost is £220,000 (£120,000 + £100,000)
The average cost is £220,000 / 2000 (from the formula)
4. The average cost is £110.

How do you calculate average cost?

GDP is the monetary value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country's borders in a specific time period.

The main difference between nominal and real values is that real values are adjusted for inflation, while nominal values are not. As a result, nominal GDP will often appear higher than real GDP.
