A bar magnet XY is freely suspended in a horizontal position so that end X points north and end Y points south. What is the magnetic polarity end Y or end X?
X points north, so it is a north (seeking) pole of a magnet. Y points sountg so it is the south (seeking). You see always call them norths and souths, but we don't write the full name. Infact the north pole of earth is in fact the south seeking pole of a magnet. Hope that helps!
