For Section 3, my background writing academic Philosophy essays is the basis for how I teach students to write BMAT essays. Not in terms of the content, but in terms of the structure and aims of the essay the desirable virtues are the same. I teach students the importance of clarity, persuasiveness, argumentation and style as well as common essay errors to avoid. If my student would like, I have prepared weekly work sheets with exam style questions to provide more practice and solidify the content we cover in sessions. These are exam-style questions, students find these weekly assignments helpful in maintaining regular practice and solidifying the exam techniques we discuss. In the end, we often compile “cheat sheets” to summarise some of the techniques we’ve practiced together. It is important to realise that tutoring is not sufficient for success – practice is crucial and I always help my students set up a regular practice timetable and motivate them to adhere to it.
